Safety Precautions
- Always make an inspection before starting the engine for riding. This will protect you against injury and your motorcycle against damage.
- Many accidents happen due to the rider’s inexperience. A motorcycle riding test or license is obligatory in most of the countries. Make sure that you are fully qualified for riding before you ride a motorcycle. Never lend your motorcycle to an inexperienced or unlicensed rider.
- Motorcycles accidents often happen just because the drivers of bigger automobiles (cars, jeeps, trucks etc) failed to notice the motorcycle rider. Make yourself prominent as a precaution against an accident by doing the following:
- Dress yourself in gaudy & brightly shining clothes.
- Keep away from blind spots so that other drivers are able to see you from a distance.
- Avoid riding along parallel lane skirting the road.
- Abide by all the federal, provincial & local rules and regulations.
- “Overspeeding accounts for most road accidents. Observe the prescribed speed limits and never violate traffic rules.”
- Always give indicator before turning or changing lane. Sudden turns you make without any prior alert can result in serious traffic accidents.
- Exercise special caution when entering or coming out of reserved parking areas near main roads or crossings.
- While riding, keep both hands firmly on handle bar and feet on footrests.
- “Any kind of modification or replacementof original equipment may render your motorcycle unsafe or one violating the legal regulations. Abide by all the federal, provincial and local regulations concerning equipment and accessories.”
Protective Apparel
- “Basic gear to be used for bike riding includes:
- (a) Helmet (preferably with a visor)
- (b) Gloves (preferably leather)
- (c ) Motorcycle friendly clothing (brighter colors to be preferred)
- (d) Shoes (with good sole grip)”
- Major fatalities in motorcycle accidents occur due to head injuries, THEREFORE ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET. Protect your face by wearing a face shield or glasses.
- During running, the motorcycle exhaust system gets too hot and remains so after the bike has stopped. Therefore avoid coming in contact with the heated parts. Dress so as to completely cover your legs to protect yourself from burns.
- Avoid wearing too loose clothes as they may get caught on control lever, kick starter, footrests and in the wheels. Ladies travelling as pillion riders should be careful not to let their Dupatta/sari hang freely as it might get caught in the drive chain or wheels, causing serious injuries.
Loading & Transportation
- Unequally distributed weight makes a motorcycle lose its balance. Improper loading affects the stability and performance of the motorcycle. It is recommended to carry light luggage, placing it in the middle of the motorcycle. Total transported load should be equally distributed on both sides of the bike to minimize the risk of disbalancing.
- All the luggage should be fastened securely and the rider should now and again check it during the journey.
- Avoid carrying articles that jut out and hinder the headlight.
